Lamrim can be translated as “stages of the path to enlightenment” and is a summary of the entire 84,000 teachings of the Buddha. It is arranged in a way that it can progressively guide an individual on the path to Buddhahood. It is said that studying a single verse from the Lamrim is equivalent in positive potential to studying all of the Buddha’s teachings. The Lamrim tradition traces back to the Indian master Atisha and his seminal text “The Lamp on the Path to Enlightenment.” This work is considered the foundational text for the Lamrim writings of the great scholar and founder of the Gelug school, Tsong Khapa. The medium-length version, also called the Middling Lamrim, is regarded as one of Tsong Khapa’s most important works and was written by him towards the end of his life.
